Hospital: Staff Member Was Likely Source Of Bacteria

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio — Administrators at Mary Rutan Hospitalannounced Thursday that their internal investigation of two bacterial meningitis cases revealed that an anesthesiologist was likely the source of the bacteria.
According to their report, the anesthesiologist was the only person common to two women who gave birth at the hospital during their bedside anesthesia procedures.
Administrators said that it was probable that the transmission of the bacteria occurred in the course of normal respiratory activity, such as breathing and speaking, after they concluded that nothing unusual occurred during the administration of the spinal anesthesia.
One woman died after contracting bacterial meningitis. The other became gravely ill, 10TV News reported.
The Ohio Department of Health previously release a report that concluded that some hospital staff had not worn protective masks during the procedures.
The state also said some expired drugs were found in circulation.
The report said that Mary Rutan Hospital has removed all expired drugs from circulation and is now requiring face masks to be worn, Aker reported.
The hospital is also requiring special observation of spinal procedures at the hospital for the next six months.
