American Pain Society Warns FDA - Don't Make the Pain Worse!

Tuesday May 26, 2009
Today, the American Pain Society tried to make it clear to the FDA that while reducing/eliminating deaths related to narcotic pain medication is a noble goal, they are very concerned that in all practicality, this effort will result in increased pain for the living. The FDA is now requiring manufacturers of 24 short and long acting opioid pain medications to come up with a better plan for managing the risk of death for their customers. This program, called REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy), is meant to insure that the benefits of the drugs outweigh the risks.

The American Pain Society warned the FDA:

It is vital that any attempts to counter thousands of opioid-associated deaths per year will not unnecessarily increase suffering for the millions of patients worldwide currently treated with opioids for their severe acute, chronic and/or cancer pain."
The APS strongly encourages the FDA to make the REMS effort accountable and measurable, and to demonstrate concern for those patients who need opioids for quality of life.
